NEW! 2026/27 Age Group Changes
Going into the 2026/27 season the governing soccer leagues are changing player eligibility from Birth Year to School Age (also called “School Year”.) All players will register for tryouts based on their birth date and new alignment under the US Club Soccer “School Year” Matrix. Tryout FAQ's
AthleteOne is our sports management software for San Clemente Surf’s tryout and registration process.

At tryouts players will participate in coach-led training sessions for assessment. Players should bring a ball, water, wear cleats/shin guards and arrive 10-15 minutes before tryouts to check-in with club personnel at the designated field. After tryouts, Surf coaches will be in contact with tryout feedback. Players extended contracts will receive details via AthleteOne emails.
Going into the 2026/27 season, the leagues will be changing from birth year to school year. We will be using the U# reference for team alignment. Players will be grouped in tryouts based on new birthdate matrices:
Lil Surfers Recreation League is an introductory program for youth ages 4-6 year old. Within Lil Surfers, we offer clinics, special camps and optional seasonal league options. San Clemente Surf's unique approach to recreation is based on expertly designed content led by professional staff. For boys and girls ready for year-round training, San Clemente Surf offers a progression from recreation league to a club commitment. Surf Club includes expanded practice types (Futsol, Arena, grass and/or turf fields), additional club-only programs, home/away game venues, league refereed games, tournaments and tiered competition.
Yes, all players must register for tryouts for the 2026/27 season.
For newly formed U6-U9 teams, the season and club contract is January-December.
All existing 2025 teams will continue playing together through their respective State Cup tournaments. 2026/27 teams begin practices Spring, 2026. U10-U13 teams begin their season at the beginning of spring (Spring League) U14-U19 teams kickoff their 2026/27 season end of spring.
For the 2026-27 season, US Youth Soccer, AYSO, and US Club Soccer are changing the youth soccer age group cut-off to August 1 to July 31, aligning with the school year. This change returns to the pre-2017 system and is designed to help players compete alongside their school-grade classmates. Key details of the change:
Effective Date: The new August 1 to July 31 cycle begins with the 2026-27 season.
Alignment: The new system aligns most players with their classmates, strengthening team chemistry and improving player retention. While most players will naturally fall into their school grade, the new matrix and age group is still derived from birth date.
Future impact: The long-term goal is greater stability and a better experience for players.

Players are required to try out for their true age group based on August 1-July 31 birthdate. Players are not allowed to play down in a younger age group as this is a violation of league rules.
San Clemente Surf's club policy playing up is evaluated on a case by case basis. Individual player assessment will be evaluated by coaches and the Director of Coaching.

Our boys and girls team are coached by world-class leaders and mentors. We are based in San Clemente with players, coaches and families primarily from southern Orange County.
Team practices are offered at local grass and turf venues such as Vista Hermosa Sports Park, Jim Johnson Memorial Park, and Tierra Grande Park.
